Upanayanam marks the first stage of the evolution in a brahmana’s life. The following are the steps and procedures involved in celebrating Upanayanam.
Ganesh Puja– According to Hindu tradition, prior to any ceremony, puja to Lord Ganesh is performed Kumarabhojanam- The Vatu learns to have his meals in the Sastric manner along with the Brahmacharis. Thereafter barber cuts the hair in five places called the “Pancha Shikaras” and then the child is given bath. Thereafter, the ears are pierced by a goldsmith to put golden ear rings.

Making of Bridgegroom– Prior to the major ceremony, (the boy) is prepared as Vatu (Upanayanam bridegroom) by bathing him, putting on new clothes with a face mark and black mark on the cheek (to avoid the evil effects bad eyes). The boy is not allowed to move out of the house till the end of the ceremony.
